Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation
Imagine a future where children grow up surrounded by psychotropic substances disguised as chocolates, energy drinks, and even medicines. This is not a distant fear—it is today’s reality. Drug abuse has emerged as a serious threat to children, young people, families, schools, and communities, undermining the very fabric of humanity.
The National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India (2019) reveals the alarming scale:
- 16 crore people (14.6%) use alcohol; 5.2% are dependent.
- 3.1 crore use cannabis, with 72 lakh facing related problems.
- 2.06% of the population are opioid users; 60 lakh need treatment.
- 1.18 crore misuse sedatives.
- 1.7% of children are inhalant users, with nearly 18 lakh children needing urgent help.
- 8.5 lakh people inject drugs, and
- There is a sharp increase in suicide due to drug abuse/addiction.
Adolescence (12–25 years) is the critical risk period. Shockingly, children as young as primary school age are being targeted by drug cartels through everyday items, ensuring addiction takes root early
Our Response:
At NewBeginnings Charitable Trust (NCT), we refuse to be silent spectators. In 2024, we launched a bold mission to protect young people and prevent addiction through a comprehensive, community-driven approach rooted in education, awareness, counseling, and rehabilitation.
Our work aligns with the United Nations Conventions and India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, in collaboration with schools, families, government bodies, and civil society.
Our Target Groups
Recognizing the diverse faces of this crisis, NCT reaches out to:
- Young people (6–15 years, 16–28 years) – to prevent initiation and reduce risk.
- Parents, teachers, and shopkeepers – to build protective environments.
- Drivers, industrial workers, and passengers – often exposed to high-risk settings.
Our Interventions
- Educational campaigns: Workshops, awareness classes, seminars, and literature distribution in schools, colleges, and universities.
- Family engagement: Meetings and infographic materials for parents in both rural and urban communities.
- Community sensitization: Awareness drives with drivers, workers, and passengers at bus stands, railway stations, and industrial areas.
- Rehabilitation support: Counseling and recovery pathways for young addicts and chronic alcoholics.
Our Impact in 2024
